| [Home | Small Media] Small Media is a collection of real-time visual effects for the web, implemented as Java applets. Below you will find some demo effects and a couple of commercial products I've written during my spare time. Good for banners and logos, LightRays simulates shafts of light shining through an image. The colors and shapes of light are defined by an image which you supply, making the possibilities limitless. You can also interact with the light by having it follow your cursor around. Below are various demos built on top of this effect: One Earth - Star Dreams - Lights of Revelation - Underwater Light Rays Click on the picture above to test-drive the new GUI that allows you to control every aspect of the effect and automatically generate its HTML source code. LightRays come in 2 editions: Personal and Professional. The Personal Edition is free and for non-commercial use. It also contains a scrolling banner at the bottom. The Professional Edition is for commercial use and does not have the scrolling banner. Purchase Professional Edition (US$10.00): This simple effect is also one of the most useful. You can use it to showcase your products or to create a photo album, which is what I did here: a 10-picture slideshow of one of the most amazing insects, the Dragonfly. To understand the power of the unique Gradient Fade, check out the following fading variations: Linear Interleaved Blind - Wavy Vertical Blind - Blobs - Horizontal 2-way Mosaic - Aluminium Foil - Swirling Paintbrush - Radial Wipe - Interleaved Dual Radial Wipe The Slideshow is available in 2 editions: Personal and Professional. The table below is the feature matrix:
(1) contains a link to this site (WaterLogic Real-Time
Graphics). Purchase Professional Edition (US$10.00): Learn what we are doing to our Earth. Find out how you can help preserve and save the Earth. It starts with the little things we can all do at home. Together we can make a difference. This effect should run at ~15fps on a 600Mhz Pentium-III class machine using Internet Explorer 5.5. You can use your mouse to control the light source. Simply move the cursor around the Earth image. Credits: The picture of Earth was taken by the Apollo 17 crew and downloaded from the Astronomy Picture of the Day archive. The image shows the continent of Africa and the huge island of Madagascar. Being an avid star gazer myself, I dedicate this effect to astronomers around the world, professional and amateur alike. This is probably the most compute-intensive effect I have released so far. It has been tuned to run at 15fps on a 450Mhz Pentium-II class machine using Internet Explorer 5.5. Like the Underwater Lightrays, this effect also takes awhile (~15s) to develop into its full glory, so be patient, sit back and relax! You can also download the high resolution screenshot (1024x1024) of this effect to use as your desktop wallpaper. This version is the original form and is much higher quality than the real-time online version you're seeing. Credits: The original star map is obtained from Your Sky. The background image of the Rosette Nebula is obtained from Astronomy Picture of the Day archive. This ancient Chinese glyph is central to the teachings of Buddhism. The Buddhist monks practice meditation and chanting which is said to bring them to a new spiritual realm, in their pursuit for enlightenment. It is pronounced as 'chan', like chant, but without the 't'. I hope this little demo has a soothing effect over you, tired traveller. Inspired by the documentaries of the National Geographic Channel, this volumetric light effect simulates the view from underwater looking up towards the Sun. The screenshot really does it no justice and you have to see it to feel the full impact. Be patient during the early moments as the waves build up to get the full experience! The effect is achieved by combining the water effect with a recursive feedback zoom, all in 32-bit truecolor. As this is really compute intensive, you need at least a 450Mhz Pentium II class machine with Internet Explorer 5+ to get a good experience (~20 frames per second). Demo: WaterLogic Logo This is the original logo effect used in the frontpage when this website was first launched. The blue graphic is the ancient chinese glyph for 'water'. Why chinese? In case you didn't know, I am a Singaporean chinese! If you look closely, you will notice that the water waves actually touch and reflect off the edges of the glyph.
